At Edify & Empower Tutoring, our specialist English support for neurodivergent pupils is designed to create a learning environment where students feel safe, understood, and capable.
We work with pupils who may experience differences in attention, processing, language, or sensory regulation — offering non-clinical, personalised English tuition that builds skills without pressure or judgement.
Our focus is not on “fixing” a learner, but on unlocking their strengths, building confidence, and developing effective strategies for success in English.
Many neurodivergent pupils are highly capable thinkers who struggle not with ability, but with:
Traditional teaching methods
Overstimulating environments
Time pressure and anxiety
Rigid expectations around reading and writing
Our English tutoring prioritises emotional safety and relational trust, recognising that progress happens when pupils feel regulated, respected, and supported.
Lessons are calm, predictable, and responsive — allowing pupils to engage fully without fear of getting things wrong.
Our specialist English tutoring supports pupils who may:
Identify as neurodivergent
Have ADHD-type attention differences
Experience dyslexia-related reading or writing challenges
Struggle with processing speed, working memory, or written expression
Experience anxiety around literacy tasks or school expectations
We prioritise trust, consistency, and positive relationships. Tutors work at the pupil’s pace, using clear routines and transparent expectations to reduce anxiety and cognitive overload.
Lessons are carefully adapted to each learner’s individual profile and may include alternative ways to demonstrate understanding, visual supports and scaffolds, chunked tasks with clear success criteria, and opportunities for movement, discussion, or choice to support engagement and progress.
We focus on progress over perfection, supporting pupils to build confidence in reading comprehension, vocabulary development, sentence structure and grammar, and written expression and organisation. Success is measured through growing confidence and independence rather than comparison.

We support students in developing verbal reasoning and discussion skills, explaining ideas clearly, building confidence in academic language, and cultivating a positive learner identity.

We support students in developing clear and accurate sentence construction, planning and organising their ideas effectively, reducing writing-related anxiety, and strengthening spelling and grammar through practical, manageable strategies.

We support students in understanding meaning without overload by developing effective inference and retrieval strategies, building vocabulary in context, and fostering confidence when approaching longer or unfamiliar texts.

Safeguarding and wellbeing underpin all our work with neurodivergent pupils, with clear boundaries, predictable structures, named safeguarding leadership, transparent communication with families, and tutors who respond to overwhelm with sensitivity and care.

We offer individual 45- or 60-minute one-to-one sessions in a calm, supportive online learning environment, with personalised learning plans reviewed regularly, written feedback for parents and carers, and optional links to Executive Functioning and Study Skills support.

We believe that success in English for neurodivergent pupils is not just about grades, but about feeling capable, feeling heard, and feeling safe to try; when pupils are supported with kindness, clarity, and respect, confidence grows and learning follows.
This includes:
Transparent communication with families
Respectful tutor–student relationships
Clear limits around preparation practices
A culture of care rather than pressure
Our priority is the student’s wellbeing as well as their academic growth.
Over 70% of neurodivergent pupils show improved learning outcomes when tuition is delivered one-to-one, compared to group or whole-class interventions, due to reduced cognitive load and increased responsiveness.

Neurodivergent students receiving specialist tuition report up to a 45% reduction in task-avoidance behaviours (such as refusal, shutdown, or disengagement) when sessions are structured, predictable, and relationally safe.

Neurodivergent pupils are three times more likely to sustain progress in literacy and numeracy when tuition explicitly teaches learning strategies (e.g. scaffolding, chunking, visual supports), rather than content alone.
